Nearly all human diseases have both genetic and environmental causes, so the ability to predict disease can be enhanced by supplementing genomic data with other data sources that capture environmental effects and physiological state. The proteome, which can be characterized non-invasively and has proven diagnostic and prognostic power, is one such data source.

Cis-pQTLs, genetic variants correlated with levels of nearby proteins, are one piece of evidence of specificity for affinity-based proteomic assays and are useful for proteogenomic analyses, such as Mendelian randomization. In this analysis, our team compiled a list of cis-pQTLs from 15 studies run on the SomaScan Assay and extracted aptamer heritability from published results.
