Smythe brings “broad experience in clinical medicine, healthcare technologies and health informatics” to role
The SomaLogic Board of Directors announced today that they have selected Roy Smythe, M.D. as the next Chief Executive Officer of SomaLogic.
“As SomaLogic draws closer to our goal of being a global leader in health information, we must continue to expand our leadership with people who not only passionately share but further expand our vision,” said Larry Gold, Ph.D., Founder and Chairman of the Board of SomaLogic. “Roy’s broad experience in clinical medicine, healthcare delivery systems and health informatics — and his deep compassion and empathy for humanity — are exactly what we need at this critical time of commercial transition.”
A trained surgeon and former translational scientist, Dr. Smythe joins SomaLogic from Royal Philips, where he served as Chief Medical Officer for Strategy and Partnerships. Before joining Philips, Dr. Smythe served as Chief Medical Officer at Valence Health, a Chicago-based healthcare company. He held the same title previously at AVIA, a healthcare technology accelerator. Dr. Smythe’s medical and research career began at The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, and he subsequently chaired the Department of Surgery at Baylor Scott & White Health and the Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine where he was also Medical Director of Innovation before moving into the listed broader roles in healthcare delivery.
“For many years, my goal has been to leverage emerging technologies to significantly improve healthcare so that every person can have the best quality of life possible — for as long as possible,” said Smythe. “With its unique resources, SomaLogic is a company with an incredibly rare opportunity to do just that, and I am eager and excited to help lead that audacious effort.”
Dr. Smythe will replace Alister Reynolds, who has served as CEO since early 2017. “We owe a massive debt of gratitude to Al for his many, many contributions to SomaLogic since 2003, both as a Board member and his service as CEO these past two years,” said Gold. “I am thrilled that Al has led the search to identify and hire such a strong successor, and even happier that he will return to his Board duties to continue to help SomaLogic achieve its vision.”
